Miriam I. Redleaf, M.D, is Louis J. Mayer Professor of Otology/Neurotology and heads the Otology/Neurotology Program and Audiology Division in the University of Illinois Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She specializes in the ear, the facial nerve, and the nerves and canals leading to the ear. Dr. Redleaf is extensively published, having authored more than 70 scholarly articles. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neurotology.
Since 2012 she has been traveling to Ethiopia and teaching ENT residents and graduates (doctors) how to manage ear disease and operate on ears. Since 2014 she has been organizing Visual Amharic workshops twice a year for Deaf children, their parents and their teachers. She is currently training ENT residents at Addis Ababa University, St. Paul’s Hospital and Millennium Medical College, and Mekelle University. At the University of Illinois, she has conceived and executed articles in peer-review journals with over 35 University of Illinois medical students, residents, staff and faculty. She has created the “Buckingham Virtual Tympanum” iPhone app for teaching the landmarks of the tympanic membrane. She has created multi-disciplinary programs for evaluation and care of patients with cochlear implants, vestibular and balance problems, and facial nerve weakness. She created the protocol and process for hearing failures in the Chicago Public Schools come for medical evaluation in ENT. She was ENT education director for 5 years until her work in Ethiopia needed more attention. Current projects are the “flow” app for easing the discomfort of clinic wait times. In process is the “Cue/See” iPhone app for adapting Cued Speech for lay use. By the time this bio is published for use in the Fall 2017, she will be on to more things.
